Women in the Miners' Strike, 1984-5
Nottinghamshire: divided county
In Nottinghamshire, the majority of miners decided to work through the strike. Colette Butterly's father wasn't on strike. Marie Price's husband was - but not all of her sons (she had four working in the pits) decided to join the strike. Jean Shadbolt was working for British Coal, and though her husband was on strike she decided to keep working. Rita Wakefield's husband was on strike, and so was her daughter Kim's husband and her daughter Wendy's boyfriend. In this divided area, conflict and tension ran high, and communities were fractured.
